USING A VPN NETWORK

A VPN is an enormously powerful addition to your security arsenal. Sure, it's easier to use a dedicated VPN app, but if you want to configure a VPN manually in Windows 10, this guide has you covered

What Is a VPN?

In the beginning, the web was created. And it was pretty good, albeit lacking in critical privacy and security controls. Unfortunately, not much has changed since the words fiat web were spoken; even though the more secure HTTPS is successfully becoming the standard for web browsing, it doesn't protect everything and won't guard against threats lurking on your network. That's why you need a virtual private network, or VPN.
When you switch it on, a VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server controlled by the VPN service. Your web traffic travels through this tunnel, and it exits to the wide-open web from the VPN server to which you are connected. If there's someone lurking on your network or, worse, the owner of the access point has configured it to steal information, they won't see a thing. Your ISP and even three-letter intelligence agencies will be effectively blinded when it comes to monitoring your traffic.

Connect to a VPN in Windows 10

Applies to: Windows 10

Whether it's for work or personal use, you can connect to a VPN (virtual private network) on your Windows 10 PC. A VPN connection can help provide a more secure connection to your company's network and the Internet (for example, if you’re working from a coffee shop or similar public place).
Before you can connect to a VPN, you must have a VPN profile on your PC. You can either create a VPN profile on your own or set up a work account to get a VPN profile from your company.

Create a VPN profile

If you don't have a VPN profile on your Windows 10 PC, you'll need to create one. Before you start:
  • If it’s for work, look for VPN settings or a VPN app on your company’s intranet site while you’re at work, or contact your company's support person.
  • If it’s for a VPN service you subscribe to for personal use, visit the Microsoft Store  to see if there’s an app for that service, then go to the VPN service’s website to see if the VPN connection settings to use are listed there.
  1. Select the Start  button, then select Settings  > Network & Internet  > VPN > Add a VPN connection.
  2. In Add a VPN connection, do the following:
    • For VPN provider, choose Windows (built-in)In the Connection name box, type a friendly name (for example, My Personal VPN) for the VPN connection profile. This is the VPN connection name to look for when you try to connect In the Server name or address box. Type the address for the VPN server.
    • For VPN type, choose the type of VPN connection you want to create. You’ll need to know which kind of VPN connection your company or VPN service uses.
    • For Type of sign-in info, choose the type of sign-in info (or credentials) to use. This might be a user name and password, one-time password, certificate, or a smart card if you’re connecting to a VPN for work. Type your user name and password in the respective boxes (optional).
  3. Select Save.
  4. If you need to edit the VPN connection info or specify additional settings, such as the proxy settings to use for the VPN connection, choose the VPN connection and then select Advanced options.

Connect to a VPN

When you have a VPN profile, you’re ready to connect.
  1. On the far right of the taskbar, select the Network icon (either  or ).
  2. Select the VPN connection you want to use, then do either of the following depending on what happens when you select the VPN connection:
    • If the Connect button displays under the VPN connection, select Connect.
    • If VPN in Settings opens, select the VPN connection there, then select Connect.
  3. If you're prompted, type your user name and password or other sign-in info.
When connected, the VPN connection name will display Connected underneath it.
To see if you’re connected to the VPN while you’re doing things on your PC, select the Networkicon (either  or ) on the far right of the taskbar, then see if the VPN connection says Connected underneath it.

  • USING TOR BROWSER

What is Tor? Anchor l

  • Tor is a volunteer-run service that provides both privacy and anonymity online by masking who you are and where you are connecting. The service also protects you from the Tor network itself—you can have good assurance that you’ll remain anonymous to other Tor users.
For people who might need occasional anonymity and privacy when accessing websites, Tor Browser provides a quick and easy way to use the Tor network.
The Tor Browser works just like a regular web browser. Web browsers are programs you use to view web sites. Examples include Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Unlike other web browsers, though, the Tor Browser sends your communications through Tor, making it harder for people who are monitoring you to know exactly what you're doing online, and harder for people monitoring the sites you use to know where you're connecting from.
Keep in mind that only activities you do inside of Tor Browser itself will be anonymized. Having Tor Browser installed on your computer does not make things you do on the same computer using other software (such as your regular web browser)

Getting Tor Browser Anchor link

  • Open a browser like Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, or Microsoft Edge and go to:
If you are using a search engine to look for the Tor Browser, make sure that the URL is correct.
Do not use any other source, and if you are prompted to accept alternative HTTPS (SSL/TLS) security certificates, do not proceed.
The website will have detected your operating system and you'll get the correct file for Windows. If this fails, you can click the link to the side of the purple button to download the correct version.
Some browsers will ask you to confirm whether you want to download this file. Microsoft Edge shows a bar at the bottom of the browser window. For any browser, it is best to save the file first before proceeding. Click the Save button.
This example shows Tor Browser version 7.0.2, which is the current version at the time of writing this guide. There may be a more recent version of Tor Browser available for download by the time you read this, so please download and use the current version that Tor Project provides.

Installing Tor Browser Anchor link

  • After the download is complete, you might get an option to open the folder where the file was downloaded. The default location is the Downloads folder. Double-click on the file “torbrowser-install-7.0.2_en-US”.
After double-clicking on the Tor Browser installer, a window will open with a warning about the origin of the software. You should always take these warnings seriously and make sure you trust the software you want to install and that you got an authentic copy from the official site over a secure connection. Since you know what you want, and you know where to get the software, and the download was from the Tor Project's secure HTTPS site, click Run.
A small window will open asking what language you want to use for the Tor Browser. There are several to choose from. Pick the language you want and click the OK button.
You'll find a new window that will tell you where the Tor Browser will be installed. The default location is your desktop. You can change this to be a different location if you want, but for now keep the default.
The installation process is complete when you see a window that says you have completed the installation process. If you click the Finish button, the Tor Browser will start immediately and “Start Tor Browser” shortcuts will be added to the Start Menu and Desktop.

Using Tor Browser Anchor link

  • The first time Tor Browser starts, you'll get a window that allows you to modify some settings if necessary. You might have to come back and change some configuration settings, but go ahead and try to connect to the Tor network by clicking the Connect button.
A new window will open with a green bar that illustrates Tor Browser connecting to the Tor network.
The first time Tor Browser starts, it might take a long time; but be patient, within a minute or two Tor Browser will open and congratulate you.
Click on the Tor Onion logo in the upper left of Tor Browser then the Privacy and Security Settings.
Some features of a normal web browser can make you vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. Other features have previously had bugs in them that revealed users' identities. Turning the security slider to a high setting disables these features. This will make you safer from well-funded attackers who can interfere with your Internet connection or use new unknown bugs in these features. Unfortunately, turning off these features can make some websites unusable. The default low setting is fine for everyday privacy protection, but you can set it to high if you are worried about sophisticated attackers, or if you don't mind if some websites do not display correctly.
Finally, browsing with Tor is different in some ways from the normal browsing experience. We recommended reading these tips for properly browsing with the Tor Browser and retaining your anonymity.
You are now ready to browse the Internet anonymously with the Tor Browser.
